Princesses

Rebecca's favorite moment of Disney (Monday before Christmas). This mommy will NEVER go to Disney again the week of Christmas!

Umm...Oops

Rebecca sustained an "ice-skating" injury this weekend to her chin. All is well after a trip to the emergency room and 5 stitches!
Do y'all really want pictures this time?

We have some shout-outs to:

Nora - hope you are adjusting well to your new family
Malani's family - hope you can bring home your little girl soon
Ivy - hope you are healing quickly

Happy Holidays (Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas)!

Hair Distress

We had another panic attack at the hair salon, again. The plan was for Rebecca to get hers trimmed and me to get my usual color and cut (yes, fight against the gray). She was actually excited to get her hair cut and had told alot of people that she was going to get it cut!

BUT, once we got there, poor Rebecca put herself in a little frenzy worrying about the color of my hair. I actually had to take her outside, goop in my hair and all, and discuss her anxiety and meltdown. Bottom line is, she doesn't want Mommy to CHANGE. And she does not like my hair to be BLACK. She wants it to be JUST LIKE HERS. And she doesn't want any surprises.

I was quickly whisked off to the bowl to wash off the offending solution. Rebecca accepted her trim, she cheerfully got a look at all of the hairdresser's tools and gadgets, and she gave final "approval" of my style. She was actually giddy for the rest of the night, as we dined on Zaxby's chicken and made a quick trip to Publix.

I was expecting hair trauma at age 17, but definitely not at age 7.

Other than salon anxiety, Rebecca is doing great! We are so proud of her great grades at school. She had her end of the term evaluation in gymnastics and is doing well. She continues to go to Sunday school, daycare, and all of her extra-curriculars with no problems. I'm looking forward to a great Christmas break!

Forever Family Day

Yesterday was a regular day for the family - almost. We all were proud and happy to celebrate our one year anniversary of bringing Rebecca into our family! After we all came home from work/school, Daddy said we could go out to eat, but Rebecca wanted to eat at home, around the table "family style." I bought her a bouquet of flowers and some other little gifts. We colored-by-number, she knitted, we did some rug-hook together, got her shower, reviewed her homework, read her bedtime book...

Nothing really different than any other day? Maybe not for the last 365 days. But a lot different than 366 days ago...

So, if anyone is interested, they will go to the highest bidder on ebay...

Princess Rivkah

Yesterday, Rebecca, Grandma Joan, and I went to Atlanta so that Rebecca could go in a mikveh. She dunked, she spoke Hebrew prayers, she's officiallly Jewish! It was pretty impressive what a big girl she was. She was only a little bit nervous when she had to speak in front of three rabbis, but hey, I would've been nervous, too!
We celebrated by going to the synagogue giftshop, then going to IHOP (she got the smiley face pancakes). Then after we drove home, she went swimming, went to gymnastics, ate dinner, and was the princess of the house for the rest of the night.
All of this doting on and attention has its price, but also its rewards. Last night at bedtime, she insisted on giving me a kiss...on the lips.

Summertime

We've enjoyed more than one week of summertime now. Rebecca seems to enjoy the more relaxed pace of summer and mix of activities - day care, swimming lessons, gymnastics lessons, sleeping late on weekends, extra naptime, and eating non-stop.
She's excited that Grandma is coming to visit for two weeks and she will go to equestrian day camp in July. She is trying to sneak in the beach and Disneyworld. I think we mentioned Disneyworld too soon, because I really think it's too hot to go in the summer. I really want to wait until December. For a seven-year old, she really is allowed a lot of the role in family decision-making!
We are so grateful for our lively, affectionate, smart, bossy, and beautiful girl! Maybe the next post I'll talk about she keeps Mommy in line...

Snubbed

Today at kindergarten, Rebecca's class was having an 'Outside Fun Day' because they weren't able to have a class field trip this year. We had gotten the notice last week and she seemed really excited and asked me to go (parents were invited as well). I filled out my leave request, got ready in the morning, all set to go, and what does she say? "I want to go all by myself." In other words, I don't need you at my school, Mommy. Go to work, please.

I told her she hurt my feelings - but really, I am a little proud of her. She's gaining her independence and she is starting to be more of a big girl every day. Congratulations, my little kindergarten graduate!

The Technical Part

There are explanations on RQ on how to use the search engine to find the pictures.
Here my 'twist' on it. Instead of translating to English, I do the whole thing in Chinese, and no, I can't read Chinese.
  1. Go to http://www.baidu.com/
  2. Click on the link right after MP3 图 片
This means perform an image search (you'll see the address bar on the top of your browser will change to http://image.baidu.com/)
  3. On my child's documents, I copied and pasted the name of her SWI that was in Chinese characters. I'm assuming that your referral file contained electronic documents. If not, you'll have to do a lookup of your child's orphanage in Chinese characters, and then copy and paste.
  4. Click on baidu's search button.
  5. You'll see the images show up in gallery format, but this is probably not the quickest way to weed your way through them. Click on the first image. The image will display. Now use the right hand navigator to click through them. If you get your mouse in just the right place, you can click through them very quickly.
  6. To save pictures to your computer, right click and 'Save Picture As'.
  7. Since most of the pictures are part of a press release, I would like to save the narrative that comes with the picture (the translations are laughable and maybe one day I can have a native speaker give us a better explanation of the article.) The URL where the pictures exist are located on the top right part of the page. You can either print off the web page or save it electronically to PDF.

The funny and sad part of this is that you might not recognize your own kid in earlier pictures of him or herself!

The Power of the Internet

There is a post on RQ about finding your child's picture through baidu.com, an internet search engine. Then I got a post on Facebook (thanks, Laurie) that there are definitely more pictures of Rebecca. So, here's what I found:

Cavatappi Amatriciana

...otherwise known as "curly noodles" in our house.

Rebecca has fine tastes when it comes to food. This week, she has developed an addiction to Carrabba's. Dad asked, "You went to Carrabba's AGAIN!?"

I hate to admit, but we've been there three times in four days. She really likes the bread...and the curly noodles. Last night, she took off her belt in the car on the way home. I think she was stuffed.

Kindergarten Parent Lunch Day

Today, Mike and I got to eat at Rebecca's school for Kindergarten Parent Lunch Day! The food has really improved since I've been to elementary school (thanks, Cleta). You could tell all the kids were really excited that the parents were there. At the end of lunch, they recited a poem and sang a song (caught on video, to be posted soon). Then we were given one of their writings. It gives me a great feeling that she has friends at school and that she is learning English so well (Can I also brag that she had one of the best writings in the class? LOL)

On a funny note, the teacher's aide told Rebecca to tell another kid to sit down at the lunch table. Apparently, they have caught on how bossy she is (just like her Mommy!) and use her as a helper! Oh, she is a little lieutenant in training.

Post Adoption Report

We told Rebecca that China needs to have pictures of her new family to make sure she has a good mommy and daddy. Well, normally, she is VERY picture shy. But for this particular occasion, she obliged!
